The proper disposal of household medicines is crucial to the safety and well-being of communities and the environment. San Diego Medical Waste can answer all of your questions and meet the needs of proper disposal of biohazardous waste in your facility. Here are a few tips for over-the-counter drugs and expired prescription disposal from home.
Proper Household Disposal
Drug Take-Back Events in your area are the safest and easiest way to dispose of unwanted over-the-counter medications and expired prescriptions. If unable to attend such events, the EPA recommends following these 5 steps:
Step 1
Take prescription drugs out of their original container.
Step 2
Mix drugs with an undesirable substance such as cat litter or coffee grounds.
Step 3
Put mixture into a disposable container with a lid such as a sealable bag or a margarine tub.
Step 4
Remove or conceal personal information on prescription drug containers using duct tape, scratching it off, or blacking-out with a permanent marker. Be sure to conceal the prescription number as well.
Step 5
The drug mixture in the sealed container and the empty drug container with concealed information can now be safely placed in the trash.
